British alternative rock band, Coldplay, are back with their sixth studio album Ghost Stories. Three singles, “Magic,” ”Midnight,” and “A Sky Full of Stars” were released prior to the album launch in May. The band stated that this album needed to sound different than its predecessor, Mylo Xyloto, their most successful album to date.
Upon the release of “Magic”, frontman Chris Martin revealed that Ghost Stories is a concept album inspired by the troubles he faced before separating from his former wife, Gwyneth Paltrow, in March. The album title reflects his curiosity on how past events, or “ghost stories”, can affect one’s present and future.
On April 19th, Coldplay joined a number of artists and released 3,000 copies of their single “Midnight” on vinyl, in celebration of Record Store Day. The band’s brief promotional tour started on April 25th and will continue in California, Paris, and Tokyo before their final show at the Royal Albert Hall in London on July 1st.
Worldwide Scavenger Hunt
Coldplay hid handwritten lyrics of all nine songs off of Ghost Stories in ghost story books in nine libraries worldwide. Clues to the exact locations of the lyrics were posted on the band’s Twitter account using the hashtag #lyricshunt. The lyrics were found in Dublin, Singapore, Barcelona, Dartford, Mexico City, Helsinki, New York City, Tauranga, and Johannesburg. One lucky fan also found a “golden ticket” hidden with the lyrics that offered them and a guest a free trip to see Coldplay’s concert in London.
