Art In Real Life
Entitled Art In Real Life, the new DUCTAC (Dubai Community Theatre and Arts Centre) 2014/15 season features a stunning selection of local and international names and events.
We’ve chosen the Art In Real Life strapline as the new season signifies a very real change for DUCTAC. As well as serving the diverse local community, DUCTAC is now an international destination for the arts and what we’re doing now really is celebration of art in real life. The new season artwork – including the season brochure – is even in 3D just in case anyone doesn’t get the message.
– Simon Coates, DUCTAC General Manager
The DUCTAC 2014/2015 season is launched in September by an exhibition of work from the award-winning British artist Jeremy Deller alongside the internationally feted Harry Potter parody Potted Potter – The Unauthorised Harry Experience – A Parody by Dan & Jeff and an evening with South African comedian Marc Lottering, both live on stage in DUCTAC’s Centrepoint Theatre.
As the season continues DUCTAC’s theatres play host to world music champions The Khoury Project and Dhafer Youssef, Moscow City Ballet’s The Nutcracker, French classical pianist Fanny Azzuro, and comedy drama Happy Birthday Sunita direct from the UK.
Stand-up comic Wonho Chung makes his DUCTAC debut whilst Trevor Noah returns to DUCTAC after two previous sell out runs.
December sees the arrival of the original, musical version of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and the new year welcomes Piya Behrupia – a Hindi adaptation of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night and, also from India, celebrated comedy drama Between the Lines.
DUCTAC’s piazza will provide the platform for other events throughout the season, including our first one-day literary festival Have A Word and the return of DUCTAC’s famous Christmas market Things Yule Like.
Continuing the art centre’s commitment to education and debate, the BOLDtalks discussion forum returns to DUCTAC’s theatre along with a brand new initiative entitled Artists In Real Life, a series of talks designed to help demystify the artistic process and various facets of the creative industry. Artists In Real Life launches with English artist Edward Sutcliffe as he returns to Dubai fresh from showing his work at The National Portrait Gallery in London and as the winner of the 2014 BP Travel Award.
DUCTAC’s resident French theatre company Culture Emulsion will be performing throughout the season, with a line up that includes contemporary French comedy Le Clan des Divorcees, as well as children plays based on the classic tale of Scheherazade from the Arabian Nights and the works of Molière, among others.
Community theatre will also take centre stage, with locally-produced productions of Doubt, The Importance of Being Earnest and The Beauty Queen of Leenane, all featured.
More to come
These are just a few highlights, and there will be more events and exhibitions announced throughout the season. Keep up to date by following DUCTAC on Facebook and Twitter.
