WHAT’S THE CONCEPT BEHIND PLASTIC PILLS?

Plastic pills is Dina El Khouri and Roanne El-Alaili. We’re both designers and come from creative backgrounds. Oh, and we’re also best friends! It started with the curiosity of working with an unexplored material in accessories: acrylic. We created a few necklaces to wear ourselves and people started noticing them and asking questions. From there, the concept evolved naturally into a playful and bubbly brand. We work exclusively with acrylic, which we combine with other materials. Plastic pills is vibrant, fresh and is meant to be worn as statement pieces.

WHAT’S THE SPIRIT OF EACH COLLECTION AND HOW DID YOU GET INSPIRED TO CREATE THEM?

Every time we have to get started with a new collection, we have a big brainstorming session. We use our combined fusion of design and fashion to create unique pieces that reflect the vibrant, crazy, classy and cool vibes of Beirut. We get inspired from everything around us, our pixelated love of the 90’s and the minimal structural elegance of the millennia. We have trend hunting sessions, to utilize and reinterpret in our way. There isn’t one real way to describe our inspiration, it’s about being open to all visual sources in our surroundings.

WHAT IS YOUR BRAND IMAGE?

Plastic pills is a pop, fresh, vibrant accessories brand. It’s all about the philosophy of happy!

WHAT KIND OF ARTISTS REFLECT THE BRAND SPIRIT?

It’s a very colorful brand and we imagine that stars like Katy Perry, Gwen Stefani, and Lily Allen would wear our accessories.

WHAT ARE THE CURRENT PROJECTS YOU’RE WORKING ON?

We’re in the final stages of the new collection. We try to bring an innovation with each season, new concepts and materials, so that the brand keeps evolving and surprising people. We like bringing the unexpected to our audience.

WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE ASPIRATIONS?

Like any business, we are working on our international presence, expansion and growth. But we work very hard to maintain our identity. We have exciting projects and collaborations coming up as well and it’s all about sharing our happy and funky pieces with fashionistas around the world.

ANY MESSAGES TO LIFESTYLE READERS?

We want to quote Prince, who said: “heavy on the accessories, light on vocabulary.”
