What about waking up each day at the same exact time… what would you do?!? Well in a seemingly obvious influence of “Groundhog Day“, the new Warner Bros’ vehicle Edge of Tomorrow transports us into an enormous military operation designed to defend Earth against a nearly invincible alien race known as Mimics! The film marks the return of director Doug Liman to the man-made-weapon stories, 12 years after he directed The Bourne Identity… this time with 51-year-old star Tom Cruise in the role of soldier Maj. William Cage forced to relive the same day over and over again. Following his creditable if unremarkable work in “Jack Reacher” and “Oblivion”, Cruise is in particularly appealing form here, in no small part because the role is one he can ease himself into. The writers had so much fun with the whole death-to-progress concept, so when Emily Blunt’s combat-hardened character Rita joins Cage in his quest, it becomes her job to ‘press quit’ when things go wrong — by shooting Cage through the head! Cruise & Blunt are remarkably joined by pitiless Gen. Brigham (Brendan Gleeson) and his fine commanding officer (Bill Paxton) in an attempt to exploit the star soldier system in some of Liman’s new inventive combat spectacle. Will it mark a comeback for Liman with Mr. Mission Impossible himself?
DID YOU KNOW? Edge of Tomorrow is adapted from manga novel ‘All You Need is Kill’ by Hiroshi Sakurazaka.
