BATTLE OF THE BOTTLES

For the 3rd successful year in a row, Khalidiya Palace Rayhaan by Rotana organized the “Battle of the Bottles” boat race on the 20th of April. This event was organized to mark the Earth Day – a unique and worldwide event in which environmental protection and awareness of climate change is highlighted to citizens around the world through various activities.

The boat construction took weeks and the participants spent a great deal of time collecting the recycled materials needed and the actual building of the boat. Intense training and dedication followed until the big day. All the teams, along with other guests, were there to show their support and engage. The teams showcased their innovative recycled boats and made a splash by the beach side of the Arabian Gulf at Khalidiya Palace Rayhaan by Rotana.

The morning started off with the General Manager’s opening speech whose words motivated the teams and highlighted the main competitions which included a Maori Haka Dance competition and the Mr. Neptune and Ms. Mermaid pageant.

The adrenalin rush started with a quick ZUMBA lesson, given by one of Khalidiya Palace Rayhaan by Rotana’s fitness instructors Ms. Lena. She made sure everyone was awake and ready for the activities. After that the Haka dance performance was truly a sight for the eyes. Traditional Maori dancing, enticing costumes and some fierce moves on the beach were seen. The winning team that proudly held the trophy was Yas Island Rotana.

Miss Mermaids and Mr. Neptune’s paraded whilst the judges scored points for design, innovation and use of recycled materials in the costumes worn by competitors. The main concept behind this competition was to highlight the importance of the sea perseverance and to enlighten the crowd about water pollution and contamination. It was indeed a lavish parade of beautifully shell-adorned costumes which were sparkling with recycled materials. The winning team with the most beautiful couple to hold the trophy was Al Maha Arjaan!

The main event of the morning was the Battle of the Bottles boat race and each team powered their way to the island opposite and back again in a race that had all the elements of drama, competition, and excitement. The fastest boat award went to the Capital Centre Arjaan! Another competition was held for the best looking boat which represented a recyclable and sustainable concept from making the boat from all types of recyclable materials. The panel of judges decided which boat was the most creative and awarded the trophy to Park Rotana.
