Inaugural kayak race kicks off at Anantara Eastern Mangroves

Anantara Hotels, Resorts & Spas in Abu Dhabi held their first kayak race on Saturday 23 April at the Mangrove National Park. Kicking off from Eastern Mangroves Hotel & Spa by Anantara, the seven kilometers double kayak race was opened to competitors from all levels.

Speaking about the event, Anantara Area Director of Environmental and Cultural Activities Amer Braik said: “Our Anantara resorts in Abu Dhabi are blessed with unique outdoor environments, and our aim is to organise more and more events of that kind, be it a mountain biking weekend on Sir Bani Yas Island, or a camping experience in the Empty Quarter for instance.” He added “the Anantara Eastern Mangroves Kayak Race will return at the end of the year once temperatures cool down, and we are also preparing an exciting triathlon at Sir Bani Yas Island later on this year.”

Participants gathered at the Anantara Eastern Mangroves from 6.30 am for registration, breakfast and briefing before the event. The race started at 8 am, with kayakers completing the tour in just over one hour.

Winners were announced at 12 pm followed by a lunch at Ingredients restaurant, overlooking the tranquil mangroves. The champions, Monica Perial and Pierre Cherki, who crossed the finish line after one hour, six minutes and 58 seconds, won a night stay at the award winning Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort by Anantara and a Traditional Turkish Hammam for two at the Anantara Spa at Eastern Mangroves. The second team, Zoe Hall and Louise Redmond, were rewarded with a night stay at Desert Islands Resort & Spa on Sir Bani Yas Island as well as a popular Thursday BBQ for two at The Pool Deck at Anantara Eastern Mangroves. Kayaking was a first try for Henrik Lindskou-Mouritsen and Sune Anderson, who finished third with a “Big Weekend” stay at Anantara Eastern Mangroves, inclusive of Friday Brunch at Ingredients for two.

Anantara Sir Bani Yas Island hosted the inaugural Kite Festival in February which was a frank success for families, as well as a hiking and overnight camping geared towards a sportier crowd. The next mountain biking and camping experience will take place on Friday 29 April on Sir Bani Yas Island.

The 2016 Anantara Eastern Mangroves Kayak Race would not have been possible without the generous support of Adventure HQ and Sea Hawk.
