55 years after the production of Walt Disney’s classic Sleeping Beauty (1959), Maleficent is the untold story of the villain from Sleeping Beauty that reveals the events that hardened Maleficent’s heart and drove her to curse the baby Aurora (Elle Fanning), only to later realize that the child may hold the key to peace in the land.
Angelina Jolie, who plays the horned, demon-eyed sorceress Maleficent, says “We’ve respected the classic. We’ve tried to bring you what you love about the story. We also hope to bring a world that you’ve never seen before. It’s a very beautiful story, and I think it is very different from what people are going to expect”. Jolie’s most recent on-screen-acting role goes way back to 2010’s The Tourist opposite Johnny Depp, with the exception of her voice acting for the successful animated movie Kung Fu Panda 2 in 2011. Will Maleficent be able of measuring Jolie’s box-office success?
Well, the 38-year-old actress seems to be busy directing her second film after Universal Pictures tapped her to helm the long-gestating biographical drama Unbroken about Olympic runner and World War II POW Louis Zamperini. As for this film, director Robert Stromberg was lucky enough to have the largest budget ever (200 million dollars) as a novice director, surpassing every other Disney film! The wait is almost over to discover the reinvention of a Disney Classic, promising to be darker than ever.
