MILAN – For his Spring-Summer 2016 women’s collection, designer Giuseppe Zanotti casts his eye on California, Los Angeles specifically, merging a confluence of inspirations and themes into an eclectic line-up of shoes, bags and special ready-to-wear pieces.
Sunset drives along the Pacific Coast Highway, chic afternoons on Rodeo Drive and edgy nights on the Sunset Strip are just of few of the starting points of the season, which celebrates the modern rule-breaker in all her varied beauty.
“Freedom, individuality and self-confidence are the driving forces behind the new collection,” says Giuseppe Zanotti. «I wanted to design pieces for a multifaceted woman – someone who is simultaneously a rebel and an angel; edgy but also elegant. Today there are no rules or dictates – the same woman can wear embroidered suede espadrilles one day and 14 centimeter bi-color metallic platform sandals the next.”
Organized into two distinct but interconnected themes – 66 Sunset and 2nd Floor, respectively – the collection advances Giuseppe’s signature motifs in a fresh, contemporary context. Here a detailed look at the collection:
Top down, music on and nothing but the sun’s golden pink hue reflecting in the rearview mirror: welcome to 66 Sunset, a dreamscape of memories culled from trips to Malibu and the canyons, Beverly Hills, Vegas and the places between.
From a boho lace-up peep-toe suede bootie outfitted with silver rivets to a sleek silver and gold leather platform sandal, the collection exudes both earthy sensuality and sexy sophistication.
Metallic leather slides crafted from specially worked lightweight wood, colourfully embroidered espadrilles and intricately sculpted heels sprinkled with multicolor crystals round out the footwear line-up.
Signature handbags include a fringed mini suede bucket bag with chain shoulder strap and an embossed metallic leather clutch.
When it comes to ready-to-wear, think statement pieces, like a rocker-meets-ingénue cropped suede gilet with childlike appliques on the back along with a sexy update of the motorcycle jacket: cut trim and crafted in python-printed metallic silver leather.
«For me, this part of the collection really embodies the spirit of the open road – that sense of freedom and wonder and fun,» says Zanotti. «Along the way there are moments of pure elegance but always through the lens of a carefree soul.»
Up the stairs, beyond the velvet rope to a place not wholly familiar yet not completely unknown. This is the 2nd Floor, an unapologetic tour de force in edgy cool laced with subtle androgyny.
Chains – from tightly woven links snaking up a pair of sculptural stilettos to large rings outfitting leather sling-backs – are key embellishments.
Architectural details – like an ankle cuff on a pair of python printed metallic turquoise leather sandals to an intricate chain-link “cage” heel on strappy sandals – abound.
Other signature styles include flat suede sandals with intricate cutouts and strap work as well as slip-on laceless sneakers with rivet and ring hardware.
Complementing the footwear collection are chain necklaces that pulse with a punk undercurrent and statement-making bags, including a hard-frame leather and metal clutch.
«Strong, tough, suggestive,» says Zanotti of the collection. «Inspired by nights along the Sunset Strip, these pieces bring a dose of rocker cool even if you’re not with the band.»
