Young Emirati artists showcase their creativity at the ComiQ exhibition inaugurated by HH Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoom
Dubai, 13 December, 2015: Young Emirati artists gathered under one platform to demonstrate their illustrations at the ComiQ Exhibition organised by The Cultural Office of HH Sheikha Manal bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and inaugurated by HH Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of Dubai International Marina Club. The highly anticipated ComiQ exhibition, which concludes today, was held over a period of five days, from 9-13 December, 2015 at Waterfront Promenade in The Dubai Mall. The exhibition showcased the work of young and talented Emirati illustrators who recently completed the ComiQ workshop, a specialised workshop aimed to nurture aspiring young artists and ensure continued growth of the art community in the UAE.
HH Sheikh Mansoor Al Maktoum toured the art exhibition and met with exhibiting artists, reviewing ideas behind their artwork and discussing the creative characters that reflect the UAE culture and the Spirit of the Union. HH Sheikh Mansoor Al Maktoum expressed his admiration of their talent and innovative art creations, particularly their ingenuity and conceptualising unique characters that instil contemporary art into the UAE’s culture. Since its opening day, the ComiQ exhibition has been attended by a number of VIP guests comprising of representatives from Dubai Women Establishment (DWE) board members, distinguished members of the local and international art community and members of the media.
The artwork presented at the exhibition includes illustrations of culturally-inspired cartoon characters creatively developed by participants and instructors who completed the ComiQ workshop. The initial designs were created at the workshop, but completed later on debuting at this year’s exhibition. The ComiQ exhibition, through the medium of contemporary art is a unique way to strengthen UAE’s vision of innovation, whilst keeping national values alive and inspiring current and future generations to feel connected to the UAE culture. The characters and illustrations displayed at the event were created based on the artists’ experiences and imagination, with the potential to be developed into a fully-fledged comic books or a cartoon series, which would help keep the Arabic language relevant to the younger generation, many of which are turning to the Western media and English language for entertainment. The exhibition also gave the opportunity for artists to share their experiences and ideas that led them to developing their final pieces and creating the characters.
Mona Bin Kalli, Director of The Cultural Office of Her Highness Sheikha Manal bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, said, “The ComiQ exhibition showcases an innovative approach as to how our local culture and tradition are maintained while connecting to a younger generation towards the Spirit of the Union through contemporary art. This cultural event highlights the importance of reflecting UAE’s leadership and culture, and to promote growth in different aspects of the nation. The exhibition has already received a high number of visitors from the general public and our endeavour is to make art accessible and promote UAE culture through our young Emirati artists’ illustrations.”
