Wally Pfister has been the longtime director of cinematography for all Christopher Nolan films since 2000’s Memento. Some more of their outstanding collaborations include The Prestige, The Dark Knight, and Inception, the latter for which he earned the Oscar for Best Achievement in Cinematography! The time has come for Wally to step into the Director’s chair and endeavor to make his first film, the sci-fi Transcendence. The film tells the story of a terminally ill scientist Dr. Will Caster, who downloads his mind into a computer. This grants him power beyond his wildest dreams and soon he becomes unstoppable!
For his wife Evelyn and best friend Max Waters, both fellow researchers, the question is not if they can, but if they should stop him. Their worst fears are realized as Will’s thirst for knowledge evolves into a seemingly omnipresent quest for power, to what end is unknown. The only thing that is becoming terrifyingly clear is there may be no way to stop him! Johnny Depp takes the role of the scientist, whose on-screen quirky eccentric persona plays best for that kind of character, along with Nolan-inspired actors and actresses Morgan Freeman, Rebecca Hall, Cillian Murphy and Josh Stewart. This time, artificial intelligence is viewed with suspicion, with a capable cast and a tantalizing story. This sci-fi film a true transcendence of old Hollywood, hardly digestible visions of the future!
