And finally there was Jazz! Esperanza Spalding, the opening act of the closing night of the 13th Emirates Airline International Jazz Festival, brough some award winning Jazz melodies back to the event delighting the genre’s fans. With her diverse musical talent she performed songs oscillating between celo, electric guitar and bass with a rollercoaster voice that mesmerised everyone at the Dubai Media City amphitheater venue. The four times Grammy award winner’s jazzy gig offered a melodic feast for the eyes and ears for jazz lovers and not only who appreciated the slow beat and rhythm of her black and white guitar which was in perfect colour coordination with her sophisticated outfit. Her last song about a black girl paved the way for the festival’s swan songs by John Legend who came on stage with a bang. Or a barrage of bangs to be more precise as the sound of barrel drums blanketed the venue from end to end. Legend quickly elevated the tempo with an uplifting repertoire of hip hop soul, blues gospel and jazz tunes taking the audience to frenzy. Sitting by his piano, fingers gracefully tapping on the keyboards he entertained and captivated the discerning crowd with his very special vocal talent. The highlight of his performance was the Middle Eastern rendition of last year’s most popular romantic ballad ‘All of Me’ heard live for the first time globally since Sony released it last month.
On his Dubai return six years after he had last appeared at the same event, Legend took fans down memory lane in a fitting conclusion to a perfect three-night unique take on music, art and lifestyle.
Sadly we have to wait for one year before the next edition comes to town.
