The Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships women’s top seed Simona Halep had the chance earlier this week to take an unusual commute to work
thanks to the efforts of the tournament and with the help of Gulf Ventures and a new friend.
After some initial nerves, Simona enjoyed her first camel ride through the dunes near Al Awir.
“This is my first chance to ride a camel. It wasn’t easy to start but now I’m enjoying it a lot. It’s nice to try something different, I love to be in Dubai, it is so different to other places.
“I feel great, I’m ready to start the competition, I hope my first match is easier than it has been in the past. I’m looking forward to playing my best tennis on court, let’s see what happens!” Halep will meet Pattaya winner Daniela Hantuchova, in the second match after 7pm tonight.
Halep, the world number 3, and French Open and WTA Finals runner-up, leads a star studded line up this week, which includes defending champion Venus Williams, Wimbledon champion and 2013 Dubai champion Petra Kvitova, former Dubai winners Agnieszka Radwanska and Caroline Wozniacki, Brisbane runner-up Ana Ivanovic, Australian Open semi-finalist Ekaterina Makarova and recent Sydney semi-finalist Angelique Kerber. Tickets are still available for every day from the box office.
