Rock legends The Who closed the curtains on Yasalam’s incredible sixth year, thrilling the du Arena crowds with an exhilarating performance of the highest calibre. With a capacity crowd at Yas Island, the landmark sixth year of the largest city-wide entertainment programme run by any race host city came to a climactic close as The Who electrified the crowd with their signature anthems “Won’t Get Fooled Again”, “The Kids Are Alright” and “Who Are You”. Getting the party started beforehand were the Lebanese blues and garage rock duo, The Wanton Bishops, who warmed up for the legendary British rockers as part of Red Bull Opening Acts programme.

The Who’s After Race Concert show was the ultimate cap on 10 weeks of community activities, health, fitness and entertainment exemplifying Yasalam’s status as the only multifaceted festival of its kind in the region. Over the past weekend the Yasalam festival has built to a crescendo of excitement with 25 international and regional superstars gracing the stage at du Arena and on the Abu Dhabi Corniche. Yas Island was abuzz with excitement as Tamer Hosny, Carole Samaha, Fayez Al Saeed and Mohammad Assaf alongside Armin van Buuren and Hollaphonic, Pharrell Williams and The Who performed for capacity crowds at du Arena, where the excitement started even earlier with the new interactive Village.

Over on the Corniche, Volkswagen’s Beats on the Beach saw the likes of Jason Derulo, Juicy J, Rita Ora, Tinashe and Charice joined by Hard Kaur, Ragheb Alama, Chada Hassoun, Sabine, Two Tone and local talent Ruwaida Al Mahrooqi. Crowds from all backgrounds enjoyed the live entertainment throughout the three nights of free music.

Throughout the weekend, fans and visitors were drawn into the action even further with Yasalam’s new location “Live at Yas Mall”. The Town Square in the recently opened Yas Mall was a flurry with artist sightings from Egyptian heartthrob Tamer Hosny and Lebanese superstar Ragheb Alama to fan-favourites Connor Maynard and Tinashe.

Yasalam 2014, organized by FLASH Entertainment, was the most successful yet in its incredible six-year history. People took advantage of the largest city-wide entertainment programme run by any race host city, which started on September 7th. Since Yasalam began in 2009 it has now seen millions of people enjoy an unrivalled line-up of free concerts, events and community activities throughout its six years. Bringing exciting entertainment and culture to the diverse communities of the UAE, the festival continues to be the highlight of the Abu Dhabi calendar.

One of the highlights of Yasalam 2014 was the second year of Get Driver Fit brought to you by National Health Insurance Company – Daman’s Activelife initiative. Inspired by the fitness levels of racing drivers, the ‘Get Driver Fit’ campaign saw Abu Dhabi residents take part in the programme’s new 10-week fitness challenge that culminated in the ultimate test with the Get Driver Fit Obstacle Course. Uniquely-designed with 17 heart-racing obstacles, the course was open on the Abu Dhabi Corniche from 13-15 November and free to try for the daring public. At the end of the weekend, Abu Dhabi residents Manjit Malhi and Anais Chauvin crowned the Get Driver Fit Obstacle Course Champions, winning a grand prize of a trip for two to Hilton Phuket Arcadia Resort & Spa, Thailand.

Delivering on Yasalam’s commitment to excitement and race weekend fun for the entire capital, the world’s official F1 FanZone™ returned to the Corniche with thousands enjoying 11 days of free activities and entertainment for fans young and old: skills and reaction challenges, simulators, special edition merchandise, with all the Grand Prix action screened live, plus a host of other adrenaline-charged activities. Nearby, the new Urban Art Zone came to life as an old shipping container and art car were transformed into live graffiti art, bringing the industrial heritage of Abu Dhabi into the creative world of Yasalam 2014. As part of Yasalam’s continued community outreach, the zone also featured workshops and teachings about upcycling and refurbishing furniture to help give back to the under-privileged in the community.

To mark the opening of the Corniche activities, the Yasalam Opening Parade saw over 200 of local schoolchildren stroll down the Corniche with their specially-designed floats based off of fellow race-host countries including Canada, Japan and Brazil. Accompanied by a marching band, country mascots and tons of performers and dancers, the parade was an incredible sight that fired up the city-wide celebrations ahead of the race.

Over on Yas Island, Yasalam kept the energy going with the first ever Pit Stop Plaza. The Plaza included race thrills such as a replica Abu Dhabi Grand Prix track at the Driving School and a taste of true Emirati culture with henna tattooing, falconry Arabic Calligraphy at the Cultural Stop.

At the end of its 6th year of celebrations, the Yasalam festival has once again built on the positive messages of competitive motorsport: healthy living, social interaction and car loads of fun. For an incredible 80 days Yasalam brought another blockbuster programme of festivities to residents and visitors across Abu Dhabi.
