San Francisco

San Francisco (Spanish for "Saint Francis") was founded on June 29, 1776, when colonists from Spain established a fort and mission at the Golden Gate and named after St. Francis of Assisi a few miles away.

San Francisco, with its 121 km2, is officially the City and County of San Francisco and the leading financial and cultural center of Northern California and the San Francisco Bay Area. It is the second-most densely populated major city in the United States after New York City.

A Charming City

Every neighborhood in San Francisco has its own nature, from the hippie fashionable of the Upper Haight to the hipster stones of the Mission. The Marina district includes up-to-the-minute brasseries and postcard-perfect outlooks of the Golden Gate Bridge, while Noe Valley invites you to enjoy old-fashioned and silent boutiques. Take a glance at the sea lions at Pier 39, and sample local cheese and charcuterie at the Ferry Building. Indulge in yoga sessions at the Dolores Park or wunderkind at the Dutch Windmill across from Ocean Beach.
