James Morrison

Who is he?

James Morrison, also known as James Morrison Catchpole, was born on the 13th of August 1984 in Rugby, Warwickshire. He is a British singer, guitarist, and songwriter, who became an overnight star in the UK after he released his album, Undiscovered, in 2006.

At that time, James Morrison was 21 years old, and his album became among the top albums in British charts.

Early years

As a baby, James Morrison contracted the whooping cough and was given a 30% chance of survival with severe consequences of brain damage. Ironically, that might have been what caused his unique voice.

During his childhood, he was influenced by his parents’ music collection, especially by artists including Otis Redding, Van Morrison, Stevie Wonder, and Woody Guthrie.

His parents split up when he was 4 years old, and he experienced a tough childhood as he lived in poverty and was rejected by his peers for favoring music over sports.

At 15, Morrison settled in Cornish Beach where he started to sing and play the guitar publically.

Soaring Success

Morrison’s success commenced when Polydor Records showed interest in his work and signed a label with him, releasing his first album titled Undiscovered in 2006.

James Morrison’s song ‘You Give Me Something’ became a great hit in Australia, Europe, and Japan, and even reached 5th place in the UK and the 1st place in New Zealand.

Two years later, he released his second album, ‘Songs for You,’ ‘Truths for Me,’ which was categorized among UK’s top 5 albums, especially due to his song ‘Broken Strings.’ The song featured Nelly Furtado and is considered his best-selling single until now.

‘The Awakening,’ his third album released in 2011, was meant to symbolize his fresh start, and include songs about his personal life, the fact of becoming a father and losing his father to alcoholism. Moreover, James Morrison also collaborated with Jessie J in his song “Up.”

Awards and Nominations

James Morrison won the Brit Award for being UK’s “best selling male solo artist” of 2007, and was nominated 3 other times during his career.

He was also nominated for the Ivor Novello Award and for the NRJ Music Award for “International Male Artist of the Year” in 2010.
