It’s said that if cereal is part of your breakfast or is a daily snack then the cereal you choose can say a lot about your health. It might be a grace or it might add lots of unhealthy elements to your body! It all depends upon the choice you make.

 

So, what makes a breakfast cereal an unhealthy choice to go for?

 

1. Many cereals hide a horrible amount of sugar. Companies let you believe that these products are healthy. In reality, the amount of sugar placed inside these cereals can go up to the quantities placed in a chocolate bar. The energy rush provided by these sugary cereals brings the hunger into its upper limits again by mid-morning. Once the energy is used up, something sweet is needed for replenishment, so if you’re not aware of what’s going on, calories will start counting up, risking your health to the obesity line. However, when you choose “real foods” like unsweetened yogurt with a handful of nuts and fruits, you’ll put your energy on slow-burning process, thus you’ll sustain for longer and you won’t crave sugar like before. To make things clear, “A little is not a problem, but a lot kills slowly”. It’s now scientifically proven that calories don’t matter as much as the ingredients being eaten, and sugar stands in the first worst ingredient place.

 

2.  There are some health dangers hidden in each bowl of cereal, and here’s where MSG (Monosodium Glutamate) stands like a king! This substance tricks your brain and keeps you coming back for more. It’s known for causing weight gain, mental confusion, an irregular heartbeat, and many more dangerous side effects.

 

3. It is also important to note that the way this food is made degrades all the nutrients and fatty acids present in the grains. That’s why chemical vitamins are added in the end, proving that you’re eating everything but except real food! Other substances known as BHT and BHA are placed inside your breakfast cereals to keep them from going rancid and provide a longer shelf-life, yet they are carcinogenic and linked to increased hyperactivity in children.

 

4. Processed cereals will create a toxic environment once they reach your intestine by promoting the growth of bacteria, fungi, and parasites. It’s the floury foods made from the processed grain that cause this stickiness of the flakes inside your body.

When you’re in the market buying some breakfast cereals, choose the natural ones, free of additives and flavor enhancements. Never look at the serving size placed on the pack, because it rarely fits the actual amount of cereal you’re eating. Always look at the 100g column and check the sugar percentage. If the sugar percentage goes beyond 15% per 100g, this product is considered as a sweet threat rather than a sugary treat. Hence, when it comes to breakfast choices, choose wisely! Read the ingredients and nutritional labels and learn how to understand them.
